Black Tape *****

Fariborz Kamkari’s harrowing look at 18-year old Goli’s video diary, which reveals moments from her almost wholly horrible life. Goli, who is given a digital camera fo her birthday, is a trophy wife in Iran and has a husband more than twice her age. He is a mixture of the beseeching and the brutal. There have been many films in recent years that have sjown the shocking immediacy of domestic violence (Ladybird, Ladybird, Nil by Mouth), but witnessing this slowly unfolding tale of marital abuse Iranian style through the eyes of the DV camera is a powerful, gut-wrenching experience.
